Abilities UNlimited, Inc. (AUI) recently completed the ADA Compliance Assessments of two more parking public lots at Camelback Miller Plaza in Scottsdale, and Bell Towne Center, including Bell Towne Plaza, Phase I and II in Phoenix. These surveys are conducted to assess issues related to accessible parking and routes of travel to the various stores. AUI is developing expertise in this often neglected area of ADA compliance and is seeking clients who are interested in resolving these issues before a complaint or law suit is filed.

Bill Scott, president of Abilities UNlimited, Inc. continues his active involvement with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). He is the chairperson of the Disability Access Review Advisory Committee (DARAC), and will be chairing the two day committee meeting at the Kellogg Conference Center at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. The following week he will be attending the Fire Safety for People with Disabilities Task Force meeting in Kansas City, Mo. Bill has been an active member of the Task Force for more than ten years and has been a frequent presenter on their behalf at the NFPA national conference.

Abilities UNlimited, Inc. (AUI) recently completed the FHAA / ADA Compliance Assessments of two more Broadstone Apartment complexes for Alliance Residential Builders. The complexes include Broadstone High Desert (104 ground floor units) and Broadstone Mountain View (62 ground floor units) in Las Vegas, and Broadstone Twin Fields (104 ground floor units) in Gilbert, AZ. This brings the number of Broadstone projects completed by AUI to date to five, including Broadstone Montecito (Las Vegas), and Broadstone Vistas in Southern CA. The number of accessible and adaptable ground floor units surveyed for Alliance by the AUI team now totals 478, with three more projects currently underway.

Fennemore Craig Law Offices in Phoenix, AZ recently reached a negotiated settlement in an ADA related personal injury case with Abilities UNlimited, Inc. providing expert consulting services for Fennemore Craig on behalf of the plaintiff.

Abilities UNlimited, Inc. has joined with Gould Evans Architects and the team of professional experts on the Herberger Theater Center Renovations Project – Pre-Design Phase. This project is funded by a 2006 Citizens Bond Election in the amount of $16.6 million dollars with recommendations for ADA compliance, life safety and security, and infrastructure including mechanical and electrical components. This project will also provide the necessary refurbishment of areas that directly relate to the patrons’ experience in the lobby and theaters, including refurbishment of floors, replacement of carpeting, seating fabric and restroom renovations.

NFPA World Safety Conference & Exposition Date: Winter 2008 Bill Scott, president of AUI, is scheduled to speak on Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities at the 2008 NFPA World Safety Conference & Exposition in Las Vegas, NV.

American Public Health Association Annual Conference

Bill Scott, president of AUI, is scheduled to speak at the American Public Health Association Annual Conference in San Diego, October 26-29, on Built Environment Standards and Law. His presentation will focus on compliance requirements for accessibility in the built environment, highlighting the Public Right-of-way Guidelines and the pending amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
