Abilities UNlimited, Inc. (AUI) Conducts Training on Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities for City of Phoenix Water Services Dept.
On April 20, 2006, Bill Scott, President of Abilities UNlimited, Inc. and Staff Consultant, Denise Thompson conducted a two hour workshop on Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities for City of Phoenix Water Services Dept. Attendance at the workshop was voluntary and the first of it’s kind presented by AUI for a department of the City of Phoenix. The workshop took place at one of the Water Services Department’s facilities in west Phoenix.
The Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities training is usually a power point presentation in a classroom type of setting. The small size of this group, however, lent itself to a more intimate, almost one-on-one type of training that was more discussion that lecture. As in past workshops, Denise Thompson’s discussion on assisting people who are blind and her “show-‘n-tell” with her “basic disaster supplies kit” was a hit with the attendees who represented several of the Water Services Dept. sites including a representative from the Security Management Unit.
When asked in the Training Evaluation, “What do you consider the strengths/ weaknesses of this workshop?” the responses included statements such as:
“Strengths were the knowledge, experiences of the presenters. Great job!”
“No weaknesses. Strengths were the instructor’s thorough knowledge, sense of humor and real examples”
“I believe the information was given in an open and straight-forward way. At first, I could see we were a bit uncomfortable about the subject; however, the instructors put us at ease, and made it an enjoyable experience. I learned a lot about disabilities and how to handle a person with a disability not only during an emergency, but in everyday life.”
AUI is currently scheduled to conduct a second Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities training for the City of Phoenix Water Services Dept. in late May 2006.
